Prominent ears, also known as bat ears or dumbo ears are surprisingly common, if you look for it.
I have noticed approximately 5% of the population have some form of “ears sticking out”. In fact, an actress in a famous, long running TV sitcom has prominent ears, and she always hides them by covering the top of her ears with her hair.
The obvious “dumbo ears”, fortunately is less common, but it can cause significant psychological impact on a person’s self confidence, especially in males (since most men have short hair, the ear cannot be covered).
It amazes me how many people are not aware there is a relatively simple and effective surgery to correct prominent ears. Best of all, the incision (scar) is placed behind the ear, and is not visible.
The procedure, known as otoplasty, addresses the entire ear, from the top to the ear lobe. It can be performed as early as 6 years of age or older, and can be done using local numbing medication, although I recommend some form of anesthesia (either intravenous or general), for better comfort.
Ear set-back or ear pinning procedure is one of the most rewarding surgeries in plastic surgery. It is very gratifying to see the new ear shape “unfold” itself during the procedure. The improvement in self-confidence of my patients is an added blessing.
I have attached before and after photos of one of my otoplasty patients. The result is dramatic yet natural.
