FDA APPROVES NEW SILICONE BREAST IMPLANT BY SIENTRA
As many of you may have heard, the FDA has approved Sientra Inc.’s silicone breast implants for use in the United States. This brings the number of FDA approved breast implant manufactures to three (Allergan-Natrelle, Mentor, and now Sientra).
I decided to do a bit of investigative work on this company. The company was incorporated in 2003 and is based in Santa Barbara, California. Of interest, Mentor is also based in Santa Barbara. I wonder if they are neighbors…that would be interesting! I can imagine them spying on each other with high powered camera lenses and telescopes!
Mr. Hani Zeini, founder and CEO of Sientra, was previously Executive Vice President of Inamed Aesthetics, responsible for both the Breast Aesthetics and Facial Aesthetics businesses at Inamed Corporation (now Allergan Medical).
Sientra only produces silicone breast implants. Since I only use smooth, round implants, I decided to compare their two profiles (moderated and high) against the “competition”. What I found was the profile of the Sientra products is very close to Allergan, but more volume and projection than Mentor for a similar size implant. In my opinion, the difference between the Allergan and Sientra product is not great enough to make a noticeable difference once the implant is inside a patient’s body. Mr. Zeini’s previous experience with Inamed (now Allergan) may explain the similarities between the two implants.
Sientra states they have the best warranty in the business. On their web-site, a limited replacement policy of up to $3600 is mentioned, which is $100 more than both Mentor and Allergan.
I will definitely look into at least examining these implants and speaking with the representative of the company. For now, however, I do not see an urgent need to use the product immediately, as I do not see a great difference between their product and Allergan.
The good news is that healthy competition (with now having three companies vying for our business) is always good news for the consumer. If the price of the implants does not drop, at least they won’t increase very quickly either.
