Losing one or both breasts has a dramatic effect on a woman’s physical appearance and often causes a dramatic loss in self-esteem and confidence. As one of the most rewarding procedures in plastic surgery, Dr. Michael Jazayeri performs breast reconstruction for women who wish to restore the appearance of their breasts after a mastectomy.
What a Breast Reconstruction Improves
Women typically undergo breast reconstruction after the following:
- Surgical treatment for breast cancer
- Traumatic injuries to the chest
- Genetic breast deformities
Individuals best suited for breast reconstruction are currently not receiving treatment for breast cancer and are emotionally stable to undergo surgery. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about the procedure.
Orange County Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction surgery is performed in Dr. Jazayeri’s state-of-the-art facility on an outpatient basis. Each patient’s unique circumstances, along with a personalized consultation with Dr. Jazayeri will help determine which of the following reconstruction methods will be best for you.
A “balloon-like” tissue expander is inserted underneath the skin in the breast area and is slowly filled with a saline solution to gradually expand the skin over time. Once the desired breast size is achieved, the expander is removed and replaced with a regular breast implant.
Tissue Flap Reconstruction
A flap of tissue is taken from another area of the body (back, abdomen, buttocks) and is transferred to the breast area to build the breast. Autologous fat transfer may also be used to help build the breast mound.
Recovery and Results
After the reconstruction process is complete, incisions will be bandaged, and compression garments will be used to minimize swelling. Since patients will still be under the effects of anesthesia, it is important to have somebody drive them home from the facility. Prescribed medication can also be taken to reduce any discomfort that exists during the first few days. Most patients feel well enough to return to work after about one week of downtime.
Breast reconstruction is a very effective procedure, and the results will gradually become more apparent over the coming weeks and months. The results of breast reconstruction are expected to last many years. Women who undergo breast reconstruction surgery are often amazed at their “new look” and develop a renewed outlook on life because of it.
